One of the things I love to do when I’m off in a city is try to wander off and take a few pictures. Sure some monuments and buildings are cool, but I’m talking about the gritty stuff, that’s where it’s at.
With these photos, you can really truly get the feel of a city. While they’d love for you to present all those shiny buildings and pretty parks, a lot of people love to step outside of those tourist spots and see what’s really going on.
A great place to get urban shots are some of those cities that were industrial, usually they have some old mills and buildings that showcase a bit of what the city was before the area became gentrified.
One of my favorite places to take some urban photography is Providence, Rhode Island. Once a city just filled with mills, as the economy changed over the years, these old mills started to fall on hard times.
The good news is that Providence is making a comeback, so they have a lot of areas where those old gritty buildings have been transformed to condos and artists lofts.
So next time you are visiting an older city, take a wander around and get a couple of different shots of the city than just some of the conventional photos you see everywhere. You might be surprised with how you love the results of the photos.
