Photography Friday – New Zealand Glacier

New Zealand is one of my dream destinations, and I cannot wait to get there one day! To pass the time, I go through my friends facebook pictures (friends who have been to New Zealand, obviously) and seethe with jealously.

In this picture, it’s a double hit because not only does it involve my beloved (imaginary) New Zealand, but it also was taken on a glacier! If you check out “The List” tab above, you will find that stand on a glacier is on my bucket list.

My friend Helena took this shot in 2004 when she was on a whirlwind 1 woman trek around the world after college and before work – the very brilliant idea those in the UK refer to as a ‘Gap Year,’ (it can also refer to a year off between high school and college). It’s a brilliant concept, and something I wish was really accepted in the US – more on that in a later blog post.

Anyway, I just thought it was a cool shot, and I love the idea of being able to climb a glacier in shorts!

  • It’s a great bucket list item! I went hiking on the Franz Josef Glacier in NZ earlier this year, and it was such an awesome experience! You really can begin to image how huge and vast glaciers are until you’re standing on one and feeling so very tiny.

Oh I bet it is amazing, and I’ve had my eye on Franz Josef and New Zealand for a long time. I will absolutely read up on your blog about it before I go!
