Baby friendly days out in the UK
A great family day out should be fun for everyone, hassle-free and with facilities available to handle every eventuality – from changing baby’s diaper to providing healthy food in child-sized portions. Beyond the basics, such as good changing facilities, high chairs and level access for strollers, it’s always great when eating out, for example, if the kids get pictures and crayons to entertain them while waiting for their food.
Prego, West Yorkshire
Children are always welcome in this little restaurant tucked away in the small Yorkshire town of Brighouse, only about a mile from the M62. There is café service as well as formal dining facilities, plus toys available in the family corner to keep babies and toddlers amused. On Sundays, this delightful restaurant provides an ideal venue for a family day out. There is face-painting, plenty of children’s books, dressing up clothes and extra toys in a supervised children’s play area. A special treat of a trip to the chocolate fountain with strawberries or marshmallows, or maybe both, will follow as a reward for clean plates.
Nothing is too much trouble at Prego’s: baby food and milk are warmed by the friendly kitchen staff, the menu can be adjusted for fussy eaters and Sunday lunch has an ambiance of family-friendly fun. Want to stay the whole afternoon? No problem! Want to stay overnight? Prego is part of the independent Waterfront Lodge Hotel where families are always very welcome.
Broxbourne Wood Nature Reserve, Hertfordshire
Fresh, clean air comes free of charge at Broxbourne Wood Nature Reserve where a stroller-friendly walk of a little over half a mile is partly shaded by beautifully arching trees. There are eight charming sculptures carved from oak along the trail, plus picnic areas and plenty of space for parking. Babies and toddlers will be delighted by the quiet ride, and by the sculptures, and older children may want to wander into the woods – quietly of course – to spot the local wildlife. Admission is free – donations are accepted.
Paradise Wildlife Park, Hertfordshire
Local hotels are plentiful in the nearby commuter town of Broxbourne and many of the major hotel chains have family accommodation in the area. These include the Cheshunt Marriott, Best Western The Bell Hotel and Days Inn at South Mimms. These are also close to other family attractions, notably Paradise Wildlife Park, which has lots of fabulous things to mesmerize babies and toddlers, who can meet the meerkats and feed the penguins, as well as enjoy the indoor attractions.
Once Upon A Playtime, Bridgend County, Wales
Keeping baby happy on a family day out will in turn keep everyone happy and at the indoor soft play center in Bridgend babies have their very own soft play area with a ball pool. With slides for the older children, a sports court, car track, and craft tables, the whole family is kept busy. Disabled youngsters will enjoy playing in the sensory room with its bright colors and lights. The café has a large area where parents can relax and facilities include bottle warming, high chairs, a diaper changing area and a limited amount of free parking. Local family-friendly hotels include the Days Inn Bridgend Cardiff, The Great House Hotel and the Ewenny Woods Bed and Breakfast.
